Imagine Dragons is an American pop-rock and alternative-rock band from Las Vegas, Nevada, that rose from college bars to become one of the defining stadium acts of the 2010s and 2020s. Fronted by the unmistakable voice of Dan Reynolds, with guitarist Wayne Sermon and bassist Ben McKee completing the core trio, the band built its reputation on enormous choruses, stomping percussion and songs that blur the line between rock and pop.
Their breakthrough run - "Radioactive", "Demons", "Believer" and "Thunder" among its anthems - turned them into streaming giants and festival headliners around the world. Their music has scored films, trailers and sports arenas, while their records have collected Grammy wins, diamond certifications and billions of streams, making Imagine Dragons one of the great rock success stories of the streaming era.
Early Life and Formation
Dan Reynolds formed Imagine Dragons in 2008 while studying at Brigham Young University in Provo, Utah, where the fledgling band won the university's Battle of the Bands that same year. Guitarist Wayne Sermon joined in 2009, bringing Berklee College of Music training in guitar performance and composition - Sermon was born on 15 June 1984 in American Fork, Utah. Bassist Ben McKee, born 7 April 1985 in Forestville, California, also joined in 2009, leaving Berklee in his final semester to commit to the band full-time.
The band relocated to Reynolds' hometown of Las Vegas and ground through the city's lounge and club circuit, honing a loud, anthemic live show. Their persistence paid off in November 2011, when they signed with Kidinakorner/Interscope Records and began working with producer Alex da Kid, setting the stage for their debut album.
Career
Night Visions arrived in 2012 and launched the band worldwide, powered by "It's Time", the slow-burning "Radioactive", the emotional "Demons" and the buoyant "On Top of the World". "Radioactive" became a phenomenon: it won Best Rock Performance at the 56th Annual Grammy Awards on 26 January 2014, earned a Record of the Year nomination, was certified diamond by the RIAA, and set a then-record of 87 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100. That crossover run invites comparison with fellow arena-pop hitmakers - our Maroon 5 biography traces a parallel pop-rock rise.
The follow-up, Smoke + Mirrors (2015), debuted at number one on the Billboard 200 in the United States, the United Kingdom and Canada, driven by the singles "I Bet My Life" and "Shots". Evolve (2017) then delivered the one-two punch of "Believer" and "Thunder" alongside "Whatever It Takes", confirming the band's place in the big-chorus arena-rock lineage documented in our U2 biography, while their streaming-era dominance drew comparisons with the stadium reign covered in our Coldplay biography.
Origins (2018) kept the momentum going before the band dug deeper on Mercury - Act 1 (2021) and Mercury - Act 2 (2022). Drummer Daniel Platzman stepped away from touring in March 2023 for health reasons, and his permanent departure was announced in August 2024 as he moved into film scoring; Loom (2024) is the band's first album without him. Touring drummer since 2023 is Andrew Tolman - notably the band's original drummer from 2008 to 2011. On streaming, the band counts multiple songs past one billion Spotify streams and more than 50 million Spotify followers. One curiosity endures: "Imagine Dragons" is an anagram whose original meaning is known only to the band.
Recent Work (2024-2026)
Loom, released on 28 June 2024 and produced by Mattman & Robin, is the band's first album as a trio. The supporting Loom World Tour ran from 30 July 2024 to 21 June 2026, playing 96 shows to an audience of 2.2 million. The band also released the concert film Live from the Hollywood Bowl (with the LA Film Orchestra), which played in theaters on 26 and 29 March 2025. New material is reportedly in progress, alongside one-off dates including Abu Dhabi on 5 December 2026 and Scottsdale on 6 February 2027 - proof of their staying power even as rock's guitar-led revival, chronicled in our Fontaines D.C. biography, keeps the genre conversation lively.
Personal Life
Dan Reynolds married singer Aja Volkman in 2011; the couple's divorce was finalized in 2024, and they share four children. In 2017 Reynolds founded the LOVELOUD Foundation, and he has become a prominent advocate for mental health awareness, LGBTQ+ rights and ankylosing spondylitis awareness, the condition he lives with.
