Early Life

In September 1976, a noticeboard ad pinned up at Mount Temple Comprehensive School in Dublin changed rock history. The ad was placed by teenage drummer Larry Mullen Jr., and it brought together Paul "Bono" Hewson, David "The Edge" Evans, Adam Clayton and Mullen himself. Fuelled by punk energy, the four teenagers cut their teeth on rehearsals, early shows and punk-infused EPs, sharpening the sound that would carry them from Dublin school halls to the recording of their debut album, Boy, in 1980.

Career

U2's rise was relentless. War (1983) and The Unforgettable Fire (1984) turned them into one of the most important guitar bands of the decade, and The Joshua Tree (1987) made them global superstars, topping charts around the world. They followed it with Rattle and Hum before tearing up their own rulebook with Achtung Baby (1991) and the towering Zoo TV tour — a reinvention that proved the band could be ironic, electronic and dangerous all at once. The 2000s brought stadium dominance with All That You Can't Leave Behind and How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb, and Songs of Experience arrived in 2017. From 2023 to 2024, the band headlined a groundbreaking residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas. Across their career, U2 have won 22 Grammy Awards.

Recent News

2026 marks U2's 50th anniversary, and the band celebrated with two surprise gigs in Dublin on September 25–26, 2026. They played one show at their old school, Mount Temple Comprehensive, and an hour-long balcony set at Bewley's Oriental Cafe in the city centre.

The band has also announced their 16th studio album, Carnaval De Luz, out November 13, 2026 on Island Records. Produced by Jacknife Lee, the 12-track record explores spirituality, friendship, freedom and endurance. Lead single "Silencio" is a 2:35 blast of surf-punk with a Mexico City-shot video directed by Cliqua and additional production by Ryan Tedder. "Street of Dreams", released in July 2026, also appears on the album. Track four, "The Mirror Maker (Rosalía)", is an ode to the Spanish singer Rosalía — though Bono has confirmed she does not perform on it — while the closing track, "Torn", features Dolly Parton in what the band describes as her last recorded vocal performance.
