Early Life
The members of Fontaines D.C. met while studying at BIMM Dublin, the city's music college, where they bonded over a shared love of poetry. Vocalist Grian Chatten, guitarists Conor Curley and Carlos O'Connell, bassist Conor "Deego" Deegan III and drummer Tom Coll came together in Dublin in 2014 and began playing the local pub scene.
The band's name has a cinematic backstory. "Fontaines" was borrowed from Johnny Fontane, the singer character in The Godfather. When they learned a band in Los Angeles was already using the name, they added "D.C." — short for Dublin City — and kept it ever since.
Career
Fontaines D.C. signed with Partisan Records in 2018, and their debut album Dogrel arrived the following year to widespread acclaim. It was named Album of the Year by both Rough Trade and BBC Radio 6 Music, and earned nominations for the Mercury Prize and the Choice Music Prize.
Their second album, A Hero's Death, followed in 2020 and brought the band a Grammy nomination for Best Rock Album in 2021.
The breakthrough came with third album Skinty Fia in 2022, which debuted at No. 1 on both the Irish and UK Albums Charts — the band's first chart-topper. It later won them the 2023 Brit Award for International Group. Standout songs from the record include "Roman Holiday", "Jackie Down the Line" and "I Love You".
Fourth album Romance, released in 2024, marked their first record for XL Recordings and was produced by James Ford. It picked up two Grammy nominations and another Mercury Prize nomination, while lead single "Starburster" became their first song to chart in the UK. The album has since been certified platinum in the UK.
Recent News
The band's fifth studio album, Dopamine Chamber, is scheduled for release on 16 October 2026 via XL Recordings, with James Ford returning as producer. Lead single "Marianne" arrived with an official music video directed by Dave Meyers.
The new record also carries a first for the band: a guest vocalist. ROSALÍA appears on the track "Where Is Gone?", marking the first time Fontaines D.C. have featured another singer on one of their albums.
To support the release, the group will embark on a 20-date arena tour across the UK and Europe through October and November 2026, and they are also confirmed to headline Rock in Roma in 2027.
