Zayn Malik (born Zain Javadd Malik) is a British-Pakistani singer and songwriter who first found worldwide fame as a member of the boy band One Direction before building a successful solo career marked by chart-topping albums, record-breaking debuts, and hit singles like "Pillowtalk".
Early Life
Zayn Malik was born Zain Javadd Malik on 12 January 1993 in Bradford, West Yorkshire, England. He is of British-Pakistani heritage: his father, Yaser, is of Pakistani descent, while his mother, Trisha, is of English and Irish ancestry. Malik grew up in Bradford alongside his three sisters - Doniya, Waliyha, and Safaa - and attended Tong High School, where his interest in singing and the performing arts first began to take shape.
Career
In 2010, Malik auditioned as a solo contestant on The X Factor. He was placed together with Harry Styles, Liam Payne, Louis Tomlinson, and Niall Horan to form One Direction, a group that went on to become one of the best-selling boy bands in history. In March 2015, Malik left the band to pursue a solo career and signed a deal with RCA Records. His debut solo album, Mind of Mine (2016), included the single "Pillowtalk", which made him the first British male artist to debut at No.1 in both the UK and the US with his debut single and debut album.
His solo catalog includes the hit singles "I Don't Wanna Live Forever", recorded with Taylor Swift - read her full Taylor Swift biography here - and "Dusk Till Dawn", featuring Sia; see Sia sells 50% of music catalog for more on the singer's recent news. Malik's follow-up albums include Icarus Falls (2018), Nobody Is Listening (2021), and Room Under the Stairs (2024). His awards include an American Music Award and an MTV Video Music Award, and he remains the only artist to win Billboard's New Artist of the Year twice - in 2013 with One Direction and in 2017 as a solo artist.
