Early Life & Dance

Tate Rosner McRae was born on July 1, 2003, in Calgary, Alberta, Canada. Her family lived in Oman when she was between the ages of four and seven, before returning to Canada. She trained at the School of Alberta Ballet and at her mother's YYC Dance Project, and dance was her first language: in 2016, at just twelve going on thirteen, she became the first Canadian finalist on the American reality show So You Think You Can Dance, finishing third in the national competition.

Career

In 2017, McRae posted a self-written song called "One Day" to her YouTube channel, where it went viral. The buzz led to a record deal with RCA Records in 2019. Her debut EP, All the Things I Never Said (2020), carried the breakout single "you broke me first," an international hit that reached No. 17 on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified 5x Platinum. Her second EP, Too Young to Be Sad (2021), became the most streamed female EP on Spotify in 2021, and she was named to the Forbes 30 Under 30 list as the youngest musician on it.

Her debut album, I Used to Think I Could Fly, arrived on May 27, 2022, and debuted at No. 13 on the Billboard 200. The real global takeover came with "Greedy" (2023): the single hit No. 1 on the Canadian Hot 100 and the Billboard Global 200 and No. 3 on the Billboard Hot 100, leading her second album, Think Later (2023). Her third album, So Close to What (released February 21, 2025), debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 — her first US chart-topper — with 11 entries on the Hot 100 and singles "It's ok I'm ok," "2 hands," and "Sports Car." In May 2025, "What I Want," her collaboration with her 'What I Want' collaborator Morgan Wallen, gave McRae her first Billboard Hot 100 No. 1. "Tit for Tat" (September 26, 2025), a breakup song about The Kid LAROI, according to reports, debuted at No. 3 on the Hot 100, her third career Top 10. Her Miss Possessive Tour was a sold-out arena run spanning 80+ dates with more than 1 million tickets sold, and in 2025 she won two MTV VMAs for "Just Keep Watching." Like fellow Canadian pop star Justin Bieber and fellow Canadian star The Weeknd, McRae has carried Canada's pop flag onto the world stage — following in the footsteps of icons such as Drake.

Achievements

Billboard Hot 100 No. 1: "What I Want" with Morgan Wallen (May 2025) — her first chart-topper.

Billboard 200 No. 1: So Close to What (February 2025) — her first US No. 1 album.

MTV VMAs: two awards for "Just Keep Watching" (2025).

Forbes 30 Under 30: the youngest musician named to the list.

Personal Life

McRae keeps most of her personal life out of the spotlight. "Tit for Tat" is widely taken to be about her breakup with singer The Kid LAROI, but that connection is, according to reports, media speculation rather than anything she has confirmed herself.
