PINK FLOYD BIOGRAPHY - AGE, CAREER, SONGS & FACTS

Pink Floyd, formed in London in 1965, are one of the most influential and best-selling rock bands in history — pioneers of progressive rock, masters of the concept album, creators of The Dark Side of the Moon and The Wall.

Early Years and Formation

Pink Floyd came together in London in 1965, founded by Syd Barrett on guitar and lead vocals, Nick Mason on drums, Roger Waters on bass and vocals, and Richard Wright on keyboards and vocals. Barrett drew the band's name from two blues musicians, Pink Anderson and Floyd Council, fusing their surnames into a name that would become legendary.

The band quickly became a fixture of London's psychedelic underground scene, with Barrett's playful, experimental songwriting defining their early sound. Under Barrett's leadership they released their debut album, The Piper at the Gates of Dawn, in 1967. David Gilmour joined the group in December 1967, and Barrett departed in April 1968 as his mental health deteriorated.

Peak: The Classic Albums

With Gilmour on board, Roger Waters emerged as the band's primary lyricist and thematic leader, steering Pink Floyd toward ambitious concept albums built around big ideas. The result was a run of records that reshaped rock music: The Dark Side of the Moon (1973), which sold more than 50 million copies and stands among the best-selling albums of all time, followed by Wish You Were Here (1975) and Animals (1977).

The Wall (1979) pushed the concept album even further, a rock opera about isolation and fame that was adapted into a musical film in 1982, which won two BAFTA Awards. Across this peak era the band's music explored recurring themes of mental health, alienation, and modern society.

Later Years and Legacy

The classic lineup began to shift in the late 1970s: Richard Wright left the band during the recording of The Wall in 1979, though he later rejoined, and Roger Waters departed in 1985. Gilmour and Mason continued as Pink Floyd, releasing A Momentary Lapse of Reason (1987) and The Division Bell (1994) to stadium-filling success.

The classic lineup — all but Barrett — reunited on stage for Live 8 in London on July 2, 2005. Barrett died in 2006 and Wright in 2008. The band's final studio album, The Endless River (2014), was built around sessions recorded with Wright and released as a tribute to him. Pink Floyd have sold an estimated 250 million records worldwide.

The band's legacy keeps growing. In December 2025, the 50th anniversary reissue of Wish You Were Here topped the UK Official Albums Chart as the Christmas No. 1 — a span of 2,620 weeks between their first and last No. 1 albums, passing The Beatles' record, and their second No. 1 of 2025 after Pink Floyd at Pompeii – MCMLXXII. In May 2026, the Royal Mint issued a Pink Floyd commemorative coin in its Music Legends series featuring the Dark Side of the Moon prism.
