Early Life

José Pedro Balmaceda Pascal was born on April 2, 1975, in Santiago, Chile. A Chilean-American, he is 51 years old in 2026. When he was just 9 months old, his family fled Chile — finding shelter at the Venezuelan embassy before receiving political asylum in Denmark. He was later raised in San Antonio, Texas.

Pascal studied acting at New York University's Tisch School of the Arts, where he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. Following the death of his mother in 1999, he adopted her surname, Pascal, as his professional name. He made his television debut the same year, appearing in an episode of Buffy the Vampire Slayer.

Career

Pascal spent years in guest roles on television before his breakout as Oberyn Martell in Season 4 of Game of Thrones (2014), a charismatic turn that made him a fan favourite. He followed it with a starring role as DEA agent Javier Peña in Netflix's Narcos (2015–2017), and made his Broadway debut in King Lear (2019).

In 2019 he took on the title role of Din Djarin in The Mandalorian (2019–2023), anchoring one of the biggest streaming franchises of the era. His acclaimed portrayal of Joel Miller in The Last of Us (2023–present) cemented his status as one of Hollywood's most sought-after leading men.

On the big screen, Pascal played Maxwell Lord in Wonder Woman 1984 (2020) opposite Gal Gadot, voiced a role in The Wild Robot (2024), and appeared in Gladiator II (2024), Materialists (2025) and Eddington (2025). In 2025 he debuted as Reed Richards in The Fantastic Four: First Steps, a role he reprises in the ensemble event Avengers: Doomsday (2026).

His journey into Marvel's Avengers saga places him in the lineage of the franchise's biggest names, from Robert Downey Jr. to Chris Evans and Chris Hemsworth.

His film Behemoth! premiered at the BFI London Film Festival on 13 October 2026; he told Reuters learning the cello was 'the most challenging task' of his career, and the film releases in theaters on 4 December (Reuters, Just Jared).

Achievements

Pascal has earned some of the industry's most prestigious honours. He won the Screen Actors Guild Award for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Drama Series for The Last of Us, and has collected four Primetime Emmy Award nominations along with a Golden Globe nomination. In 2023 he picked up the MTV Movie & TV Award for Best Hero and was named to the Time 100 list of the world's most influential people.

Personal Life

Pascal keeps his private life closely guarded and rarely discusses his relationships publicly. He is widely known as a vocal ally of the LGBTQ+ community and has used his platform to support charitable and social causes.

According to reports, he earned a reported per-episode fee of around $600,000 for the first season of The Last of Us, and his net worth in 2026 is estimated at roughly $22 million. These figures come from industry estimates and should be treated as approximate.
