Robert John Downey Jr. was born on April 4, 1965, in Manhattan, New York City. The younger of two children of filmmaker Robert Downey Sr. and actress Elsie Ann Ford, he grew up in Greenwich Village alongside his older sister Allyson, with film sets as a normal part of childhood. He made his acting debut at five in his father's film Pound (1970), studied at the Stagedoor Manor performing arts camp, and dropped out of Santa Monica High School in 1982 to act full time.
