The Story
Set in 1930s Chicago, the film follows a lonely Frankenstein, played by Christian Bale as Frank, who turns to the groundbreaking scientist Dr. Euphronius, played by Annette Bening, and asks her to create a companion for him. Together, the two revive a murdered young woman, and the Bride, played by Jessie Buckley in a dual role as Ida and the Bride, is born. What follows is a gothic romance about two outsiders finding each other in a world that fears them.
Buckley also leads the Hamnet (2026) movie, another of the year's literary adaptations, while the film shares its source material with the Frankenstein (2025) movie, a recent screen version of Mary Shelley's novel. For another 2026 release, see our coverage of The Gallerist (2026) movie.
Please note: this is an evergreen catalog pick. The film reached theatres in March 2026, so it is not a new release.
According to reports, the film received mixed reviews and proved a commercial disappointment, grossing about $24 million worldwide against a reported $80–90 million budget.
Soundtrack & Score
The score was composed by Oscar-winning Icelandic composer Hildur Guðnadóttir, who replaced the originally announced Jonny Greenwood, with Randall Poster serving as music supervisor. The film leans hard into its punk-rock spirit, with big choreographed dance numbers woven through the story.
The official trailer is soundtracked by Florence + The Machine's "Everybody Scream", and Gyllenhaal has said she picked Siouxsie and the Banshees' cover of Iggy Pop's "The Passenger" as a thematic punk reference for the film. The music-led approach recalls the Sinners (2025) movie, another recent release built around performance and song. No verified standalone soundtrack-album tracklist has been released, and no streaming date has been confirmed.
