Lizzo, born Melissa Viviane Jefferson on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan, is an American singer, rapper, songwriter and classically trained flautist who turned self-belief into pop stardom. The flute-playing star behind Truth Hurts and About Damn Time is 38 years old as of 2026, and her journey from Detroit to Houston and Minneapolis, and then to the top of the charts, is one of modern pop's most joyful success stories.
Early Life
Lizzo was born Melissa Viviane Jefferson on April 27, 1988, in Detroit, Michigan, USA. She lived in Detroit until she was ten, when her family moved to Houston, Texas. Growing up in Houston, she trained as a classical flautist, an instrument that would later become her signature on stage, setting her apart from almost every other pop star of her generation.
Her stage name blends her childhood nickname "Lissa" with JAY-Z's 2001 song "Izzo (H.O.V.A.)". After her time in Houston, she became part of the hip-hop scene in Minneapolis, Minnesota, where she began building the confident, genre-blending sound that would define her career.
Career
Lizzo released her debut album, "Lizzobangers", in 2013, followed by "Big Grrrl Small World" in 2015. Her major-label debut, "Cuz I Love You", arrived in 2019 and brought her music to a much wider audience. Her next album, "Special", followed in 2022 and became her first album to reach No. 1 on the Billboard 200.
Her breakthrough songs include "Good as Hell" and "Juice", but it was "Truth Hurts" that changed everything. First released in 2017 and later added as a deluxe bonus track to "Cuz I Love You", the song became a sleeper viral hit, topped the Billboard Hot 100 and became the longest-leading solo song by a female rapper at the time. In 2022, "About Damn Time" gave her another Billboard Hot 100 No. 1.
Lizzo has won 4 Grammy Awards. At the 62nd Grammy Awards she received 8 nominations, the most of any artist that year, and won Best Urban Contemporary Album for "Cuz I Love You", Best Pop Solo Performance for "Truth Hurts" and Best Traditional R&B Performance for "Jerome". "About Damn Time" later won Record of the Year at the 65th Grammy Awards in 2023. She is also an Emmy winner for her reality series "Lizzo's Watch Out for the Big Grrrls" (2022), and an actress, notably in "Hustlers" (2019).
Recent Work
On February 28, 2025, Lizzo released "Love in Real Life", her first solo release in three years, with a Colin Tilley-directed, 80s-inspired music video, and announced her fifth studio album under the same title, released through Nice Life Recording Company and Atlantic Records. She followed it with the single "Still Bad" and the mixtape "My Face Hurts from Smiling" (2025), featuring Doja Cat and SZA. A deluxe edition added nine more songs, including features from Lil Jon and Tierra Whack. Read the Doja Cat biography and the SZA biography for more on her collaborators.
In 2026, her album "BITCH" was released in June 2026, heralded by the single "Don't Make Me Love U". To be clear, "Love in Real Life" was a February 2025 single and the album's original working title; it was not a February 2026 album. The 2026 album is "BITCH" (June 2026).
Personal Life
On stage and in her songs, Lizzo has built her public image around confidence, self-love and joy, themes that run through "Good as Hell", "Truth Hurts" and "About Damn Time". Away from her music, she keeps much of her private life out of the spotlight.
In 2023, three former backup dancers and a former wardrobe assistant alleged a hostile work environment during her 2023 tour, according to Britannica. No outcome is stated here, and none should be assumed.
