Swae Lee, born Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown on June 7, 1993, is an American rapper and singer, best known as one half of the hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd alongside his brother Slim Jxmmi, and as the voice behind the diamond-certified hit "Sunflower" with Post Malone. Over the past decade, he has moved easily between chart-topping group records, solo albums, and guest appearances on some of the biggest songs of his generation.
Early Life And Rae Sremmurd
Swae Lee was born Khalif Malik Ibn Shaman Brown on June 7, 1993, in Inglewood, California. He was raised in Tupelo, Mississippi, with his brother Aaquil Brown, better known as Slim Jxmmi. The brothers grew up making music together, and in 2010 they formed the hip-hop duo Rae Sremmurd.
Their big break came in 2013, when they signed to producer Mike Will Made It's EarDrummers Entertainment label in partnership with Interscope Records. Rae Sremmurd went on to release four studio albums: SremmLife (2015), SremmLife 2 (2016), SR3MM (2018), and Sremm 4 Life (2023). Their breakthrough single "Black Beatles" (2016) topped the Billboard Hot 100 for seven weeks and became one of the defining hits of the decade.
Solo Career
Alongside his work with Rae Sremmurd, Swae Lee launched a solo career with his debut album Swaecation in 2018. That same year, he teamed up with Post Malone on "Sunflower," released on October 18, 2018, as part of the Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse soundtrack. The song reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100, earned two Grammy nominations, and became the first song in RIAA history to be certified double-diamond, or 20x platinum. Swae Lee has also lent his voice to other major hits. He featured on French Montana's "Unforgettable" (2017), which peaked at No. 3 on the Hot 100 and was certified diamond, and on Travis Scott's "Sicko Mode" (2018).
