STAIND BIOGRAPHY — AGE, MEMBERS, SONGS & FACTS

Staind is an American rock band from Springfield, Massachusetts, formed in 1995 and fronted by singer and rhythm guitarist Aaron Lewis. Rising with the post-grunge wave of the late 1990s, the band carved out its own lane with heavy, groove-driven riffs and raw, confessional lyrics that spoke to a generation.

Their big breakthrough came with Break the Cycle (2001), which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and made Staind one of the defining rock acts of the early 2000s. After years of chart-topping albums, a quieter hiatus period, and a celebrated comeback with Confessions of the Fallen (2023), the band returned in October 2026 with their new single "Ghosts."

Early Life / Formation

The Staind story begins in Springfield, Massachusetts, where vocalist Aaron Lewis met guitarist Mike Mushok at a Christmas party in 1993. The two clicked over music, and on November 24, 1995, Staind was officially formed, with drummer Jon Wysocki and bassist Johnny April completing the lineup.

Like many great rock bands, Staind started from the ground up. They self-released their debut album, Tormented, in 1996, grinding through local shows and building a loyal fanbase the hard way. Their intensity and Lewis's emotionally charged vocals quickly set them apart from the crowd.

Career

The band's luck changed when Fred Durst, frontman of Limp Bizkit, caught them live and signed them to his Flip Records imprint. Their major-label debut, Dysfunction (1999), went platinum and introduced Staind to a national audience with the single "Mudshovel."

Then came Break the Cycle in 2001 — the album that changed everything. It debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and held the top spot for three weeks, eventually going multi-platinum (5x platinum, and 7x RIAA-certified as of September 2026, according to reports). Its lead single "It's Been Awhile" broke into the top five of the Billboard Hot 100 and has since been certified 8x platinum — a rare feat for a rock ballad.

Remarkably, the band's next two albums — 14 Shades of Grey (2003) and Chapter V (2005) — also debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard 200. Singles like "Fade," "For You," "Price to Play," "So Far Away," "Right Here" and "Believe" kept Staind a fixture on rock radio throughout the decade. In 2011, longtime drummer Jon Wysocki left the band and was replaced by Sal Giancarelli. Tragically, Wysocki passed away on May 18, 2024, at age 53; according to reports from Blabbermouth and TMZ, his cause of death was related to liver issues.

Recent Work

After slowing down in the mid-2010s — including a hiatus around 2014, an acoustic set in 2017, and a full reunion in 2019 — Staind ended a 12-year studio gap with Confessions of the Fallen, released in September 2023 via Alchemy Recordings and BMG. The album debuted at No. 4 on the Billboard Top Album Sales chart and reached No. 1 on the Active Rock chart, with "Lowest in Me" and "Here and Now" topping rock radio.

In October 2026, Staind released "Ghosts," their first new music since September 2024 — a single and music video produced by Erik Ron (see our Staind "Ghosts" news post). The song is widely reported as the expected lead single from the band's ninth studio album, though to be honest, no album title, tracklist, or release date has been confirmed yet. Guitarist Mike Mushok said in May 2026 that the record was finished but some demos needed replacing, which suggests a release is unlikely before 2027.

Staind is also celebrating its biggest album on the road: the Break the Cycle 25th Anniversary Tour is ongoing, with a second leg alongside Seether, Hoobastank and Hinder set to begin on March 4, 2027.

Personal Life / Members

Staind's current lineup features Aaron Lewis (lead vocals, rhythm guitar), Mike Mushok (lead guitar), Johnny April (bass, backing vocals), and Sal Giancarelli (drums) — a tight unit that has weathered the ups and downs of the music business together.

Away from the band, Lewis has built a successful solo career in country music, with albums including The Road (2012), Sinner (2016) — which hit No. 1 on the US Country chart — State I'm In (2019), Frayed at Both Ends (2022), The Hill (2024), and Give My Country Back (2026). He also runs the non-profit It Takes a Community, which supports families and children in need.
