JOHN MAYER ANNOUNCES "TOM AND JERRY" — FIRST SOLO SINGLE IN FIVE YEARS, OUT OCTOBER 23

John Mayer has announced "Tom and Jerry" as his first solo single in five years, out on October 23, 2026. The news broke through an Instagram teaser posted on October 16, 2026, the singer's 49th birthday.

Fans have waited since 2021 for new solo material from Mayer, and the short clip suggests the wait has been worth it. Here is everything confirmed so far about the new single, the teaser and what comes next.

The Teaser

The black-and-white clip, posted on Mayer's 49th birthday, shows a man and a woman handcuffed together. It is captioned "I'll run away with you... October 23" and carries a short music snippet from the single.

The previewed lyric reads: "You're my badge / Baby, I'm your scar / Throwin' daggers at the camera / Tryin' to hit me from afar / Now if you ever come through / Which I doubt you'll do / I'll run away with you."

Some listeners have compared the snippet's sound to Bruce Springsteen's 1985 single "I'm on Fire" — that comparison is a fan reaction, not anything confirmed by Mayer.

What's Next

Mayer is set to play a 21-show residency at the Sphere in Las Vegas from April to June 2027, following earlier appearances at the venue with Dead & Company. Readers following Metallica's Sphere residency shows will know the scale the venue offers. In June 2026, Mayer was featured on Lainey Wilson's track "Phone, Keys, Wallet."

No album has been announced alongside the single, and there is no confirmed indication of a larger project at this time.
