Early Life

John Cena was raised in West Newbury, Massachusetts, the son of Carol Cena and John Cena Sr. He grew up with four brothers — Dan, Matt, Steve and Sean. He is the grandson of Tony Lupien, a former Major League Baseball first baseman.

Cena attended Springfield College, where he earned a degree in exercise physiology and kinesiology. He played center on the college football team, earning NCAA Division III All-American honors and serving as team captain. He later moved to California to pursue bodybuilding.

Career

Cena signed with WWE in 2001 and trained in its Ohio Valley Wrestling (OVW) developmental territory. He made his main-roster debut on June 27, 2002, answering an open challenge from Kurt Angle. He soon adopted the "Doctor of Thuganomics" rapper persona, which made him a fan favorite.

He won his first WWE Championship at WrestleMania 21 in 2005, launching one of the most dominant careers in wrestling history. Cena went on to become a WWE-recognized record 17-time world champion, surpassing Ric Flair's 16. He moved to a part-time schedule from 2017 as his acting career took off.

Cena announced a year-long farewell tour for 2025, his final year as an in-ring competitor. His final match took place on December 13, 2025, against Gunther at WWE Saturday Night's Main Event, where he lost by submission.

In December 2025 he signed a five-year WWE brand-ambassador deal. In 2026 he hosted WrestleMania 42 and announced the "John Cena Classic" tournament. Cena has said he will not wrestle again.
