The True Story Behind Elsinore
Elsinore dramatises the extraordinary final act of Ian Charleson's life. Best known to audiences as Eric Liddell in the 1981 Oscar-winning Chariots of Fire, Charleson was diagnosed HIV-positive in 1986. Three years later, while seriously ill with AIDS, he took on Shakespeare's most punishing role: Hamlet at London's National Theatre.
In the film's telling, Daniel Day-Lewis walks off the Hamlet stage mid-performance, and Charleson steps in to take on the role. Through late 1989, Charleson rehearsed and then delivered 24 gruelling three-hour performances as the Prince of Denmark. He died seven weeks after the run ended, in 1990, at just 40 years old.
It is a story of staggering courage and devotion to the craft of acting, and it has given Scott one of the most emotionally charged roles of his career.
Andrew Scott's Oscar-Buzz Performance
Since its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival on September 4, 2026, followed by a gala screening at the Toronto International Film Festival, Scott's portrayal of Charleson has drawn wide critical acclaim, with talk of a possible Academy Award nomination steadily gathering pace.
On the opening-night red carpet at Royal Festival Hall, Scott paid tribute to the real Charleson, calling him a real hero for doing it. Director Simon Stone praised the performance as incredibly moving.
Scott not only stars in the film but also produced it, underscoring how personally invested he is in bringing Charleson's story to the screen. Elsinore is a StudioCanal, LD Entertainment, Lucky Red and Magnolia Mae Films production, distributed by Focus Features.
