Deepika Padukone is one of the highest-paid actresses in Indian cinema and a three-time Filmfare Award winner. Born in Copenhagen and raised in Bangalore, she traded competitive badminton for modelling before storming Bollywood with a dream debut opposite Shah Rukh Khan.
Her filmography moves between sweeping historical epics and modern-day blockbusters, and her 2017 Hollywood debut turned her into a genuinely global face. From badminton courts to red carpets, her rise remains one of Indian cinema's great success stories.

Early Life and Modelling
Deepika Prakash Padukone was born on 5 January 1986 in Copenhagen, Denmark, where her father Prakash Padukone — one of India's greatest badminton players — was based at the time. When she was a year old, the family moved back to Bangalore, where she grew up with her mother Ujjala, a travel agent, and her younger sister Anisha, who became a golfer. The family speaks Konkani at home.
Like her father, Deepika took up badminton early and played in national-level championships as a teenager. But modelling soon took over: after Sophia High School in Bangalore and pre-university at Mount Carmel College, she enrolled at IGNOU for a BA in sociology but quit to pursue modelling full time. Her first screen appearance came in 2005 in Himesh Reshammiya's music video "Naam Hai Tera", followed by her acting debut in the Kannada film Aishwarya (2006).
Career Breakthrough and Stardom
Her Bollywood launch could hardly have been bigger — a dual role opposite Shah Rukh Khan in Om Shanti Om (2007), which won her the Filmfare Award for Best Female Debut. A quieter phase followed, with mixed results at the box office.
The turnaround came with Cocktail (2012), where her turn as the free-spirited Veronica marked a career turning point. What followed was one of the most dominant runs in modern Hindi cinema: Yeh Jawaani Hai Deewani and Chennai Express (both 2013), Goliyon Ki Raasleela Ram-Leela (2013), Happy New Year (2014), Piku (2015, which earned her the Filmfare Award for Best Actress), Bajirao Mastani (2015) and Padmaavat (2018) — three of them sweeping historical epics directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali. In 2017 she made her Hollywood debut opposite Vin Diesel in xXx: Return of Xander Cage. She also headlined comedies including Housefull (2010) and Desi Boyz (2011) opposite Akshay Kumar, made a cameo in Jawan (2023), and returned to the top of the box-office charts with Pathaan (2023), Fighter (2024) and Kalki 2898 AD (2024) — in which she played SUM-80/Sumathi while pregnant; the sci-fi epic grossed over Rs 1,042 crore worldwide.
Beyond films, Deepika runs her own production company Ka Productions (founded 2018; it produced Chhapaak in 2020) and the mental-health advocacy foundation Live Love Laugh.
