Early Life

Charlize Theron was born in Benoni, a city in South Africa's Gauteng province, and spent her childhood on her parents' farm nearby. From an early age she trained seriously in ballet, a discipline that would shape her physicality on screen years later.

As a teenager she won a modeling contract that took her to Europe, and she soon moved to New York City to study with the Joffrey Ballet. A knee injury cut her dancing career short, and she shifted her focus to acting, relocating to Los Angeles to pursue film work.

Career

Theron broke through in the late 1990s with leading roles in The Devil's Advocate (1997), Mighty Joe Young (1998) and The Cider House Rules (1999). Her career changed course with Monster (2003), in which her unrecognizable portrayal of Aileen Wuornos won the Academy Award for Best Actress.

She then built a formidable action resume: Hancock (2008), Snow White and the Huntsman (2012), Prometheus (2012), Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) as the one-armed Imperator Furiosa, Atomic Blonde (2017), and the Fast & Furious installments. Like fellow screen heroines Gal Gadot and Angelina Jolie, she helped redefine what a female-led action film could achieve.

In the early 2000s she founded her own production company, Denver and Delilah Productions, and in 2016 she was named to the Time 100 list. Her Oscar-nominated turn in Bombshell (2019) cast her opposite Margot Robbie and Nicole Kidman as former Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly.

Off screen, Theron founded the Charlize Theron Africa Outreach Project, and like fellow stars Angelina Jolie and Emma Watson she has used her public profile for humanitarian and advocacy work.

Recent Work (2024–2026)

Theron returned as the immortal warrior Andy in The Old Guard 2, released on Netflix on 2 July 2025 and directed by Victoria Mahoney. Co-starring Uma Thurman and Henry Golding, the sequel topped Netflix's global charts within days of release.

According to reports, including the Express Tribune, she has also wrapped a new Netflix action film titled Apex. Next, she joins Christopher Nolan's The Odyssey (2026), due in theaters on 17 July 2026. CinemaCon footage identified her character as Calypso, according to THR via ComingSoon, though earlier reports had named Circe, so the role is still best treated as reported rather than confirmed.
