Early Life

Born Samuel Thomas Fender on 25 April 1994 in North Shields, England, Sam grew up in a musical household. His father Alan is a singer-songwriter and musician, and his brother Liam is a drummer, so music was part of daily life from an early age. He took to the guitar at around twelve and spent his teenage years playing local open-mic nights, developing the raw, anthemic sound that would later define him. He attended John Spence Community High School and Whitley Bay High School.

Career

Sam’s career began in 2017 with a run of independent singles that quickly carried his name beyond the North East. The early buzz earned him a place on the BBC Sound of 2018 shortlist, and he signed with Polydor, releasing the Dead Boys EP in 2018. In 2019 he received the BRITs Critics’ Choice award, and his debut album Hypersonic Missiles went straight to UK No.1 later that year. His second album, Seventeen Going Under (2021), also topped the UK chart, earned a Mercury Prize shortlist nod, and its title track became a career-defining anthem. People Watching (2025) completed the hat-trick of UK No.1 albums and went on to win the Mercury Prize in 2025. Along the way he has headlined arenas including London’s O2 and Newcastle’s St James’ Park, building a reputation for socially conscious songwriting that gives voice to working-class life.
