Written by Gotye (Wouter De Backer), "Somebody That I Used to Know" samples Luiz Bonfa's 1967 instrumental "Seville". Kimbra, the New Zealand singer, sings the second verse from the woman's perspective, answering Gotye's account of the break-up and giving the song its famous two-sided conversation.

The official music video was directed by Australian artist Natasha Pincus and premiered on 5 July 2011.
