SHYGIRL BIOGRAPHY - AGE, CAREER, SONGS & FACTS

Shygirl, the stage name of British singer, DJ, rapper and songwriter Blane Muise, has grown from a South London club-scene favourite into one of the most distinctive voices in modern electronic pop. Born on 4 May 1993 in London, the artist of Grenadian descent first broke through with her debut single "Want More" in 2016, and has since built a career that runs from the Mercury Prize-nominated debut album Nymph to the Club Shy EP and a second album, Swallow!, due out on 6 November 2026.

Now 33, Shygirl pairs sharp, playful songwriting with club-ready production, moving easily between singing, rapping and DJing. Her rise has been steady and self-directed, shaped by the independent label and collective she helped to build and by collaborations with some of experimental pop's most respected names.

Early Life

Blane Muise was born on 4 May 1993 in London, England, and grew up around Blackheath in South London. Of Grenadian descent, she came up in the city's club culture, an influence that still runs through her music today.

Before her solo career took off, Muise became co-head and co-founder of Nuxxe, the record label and collective she runs with Sega Bodega, Coucou Chloe and Oklou. The label has remained the home of her releases and a platform for her wider creative circle.

Career

Shygirl released her debut single, "Want More", in 2016, produced by Sega Bodega. She followed it with her debut EP, Cruel Practice, in 2018, and her second EP, ALIAS, in 2020 through Because Music.

Her debut studio album, Nymph, arrived on 30 September 2022 via Nuxxe and Because Music to critical acclaim. It reached No. 34 on the UK Albums Chart and No. 1 on the UK Dance Albums Chart, and was nominated for the 2023 Mercury Prize.

She kept the momentum going with the Club Shy EP in 2024. Across her career, her collaborations have included Arca, SOPHIE, Sega Bodega and Mura Masa, and her work sits alongside fellow pop innovators — see our Charli XCX biography for another artist reshaping the genre.
