Led Zeppelin was an English rock band formed in London in 1968, and remains one of the most celebrated acts in rock history. The classic lineup featured vocalist Robert Plant, guitarist Jimmy Page, bassist and keyboardist John Paul Jones, and drummer John Bonham. Known for their thunderous sound, towering albums, and legendary live shows, they helped define hard rock and remain giants of popular music more than five decades later.
In October 2026, Led Zeppelin made headlines for the first time in years when "Stairway to Heaven" was licensed for a film for the first time ever. The song appears in the trailer for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew, released October 13, 2026 — Gerwig met Page and Plant in person, played them an early cut, and both signed off. Read the Narnia: The Magician's Nephew trailer news for the full story.
Early Life
Led Zeppelin evolved from the Yardbirds. When the Yardbirds wound down in 1968, guitarist Jimmy Page assembled a new lineup that first performed as "The New Yardbirds." The new band — Page on guitar, Robert Plant on vocals, John Paul Jones on bass and keyboards, and John Bonham on drums — quickly adopted the name Led Zeppelin and signed with Atlantic Records, setting the stage for one of the most successful runs in rock history.
Formed: 1968, London, England
Genre: Rock
Label: Atlantic Records
Career
In ten years, Led Zeppelin released eight studio albums — every one a landmark:
Led Zeppelin (1969), Led Zeppelin II (1969), Led Zeppelin III (1970), the untitled fourth album — Led Zeppelin IV (1971), which features "Stairway to Heaven" — Houses of the Holy (1973), Physical Graffiti (1975), Presence (1976), and In Through the Out Door (1979).
Their commercial record is staggering: an estimated 200–300 million records sold worldwide, 111.5 million RIAA-certified units in the United States, six No. 1 albums on the US Billboard 200, and eight consecutive No. 1 albums in the UK. Their honors include induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1995 (inducted by Aerosmith's Steven Tyler and Joe Perry), the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2006, the Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award in 2005, and the Kennedy Center Honors in 2012.
The band's story changed forever when drummer John Bonham died on September 25, 1980, at the age of 32. Rather than replace him, the remaining members announced the band's disbandment on December 4, 1980.
The surviving members reunited for a one-off concert at the Ahmet Ertegun Tribute Concert at London's O2 Arena in 2007, with Bonham's son Jason Bonham on drums — released as Celebration Day in 2012. Recent Work
October 2026 brought landmark news: "Stairway to Heaven" was licensed for a film for the first time ever — Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew. The trailer dropped October 13, 2026, after Gerwig personally met Jimmy Page and Robert Plant, played them an early cut, and won both their sign-off. The band had famously refused earlier requests, including Wayne's World (1992), Almost Famous (2000), Stranger Things, and The Simpsons. The film opens theatrically on February 12, 2027 and arrives on Netflix on April 2, 2027.
Robert Plant stayed busy on the road, touring the US with Saving Grace from September 18 to October 15, 2026 — including Hardly Strictly Bluegrass on October 3–4, 2026 — and picking up a lifetime achievement award from the Americana Music Association in Nashville on September 16, 2026.
Jimmy Page relaunched his website, which went live on August 28, 2026, giving fans a new home for the guitarist's archive and updates.
