The Chart Story
The No. 1 debut makes “Patient Zero” Swift's 16th Hot 100 leader and her 10th song to enter the chart at No. 1. The other three new tracks from The Encore also crash the top five: “Cleveland!” lands at No. 3, “Babylon” at No. 4, and “Pink Clouding” at No. 5.
The single's music video premiered at the 2026 MTV Video Music Awards on September 27, starring Dakota Johnson and Colin Farrell, and Swift kept the momentum going with a surprise cameo on Saturday Night Live on October 3. You can read the full words to the song on our Patient Zero lyrics page.
A Record-Smashing Week
With her 10th No. 1 Hot 100 debut, Swift ties Drake for the most chart-topping debuts in Hot 100 history.
Her 16 No. 1s put her third on the all-time list, behind The Beatles with 20 and Mariah Carey with 19. Swift has also collected 74 career Hot 100 top 10s — the most among women and the second-highest total ever, after Drake's 90.
The Life of a Showgirl returns to No. 1 on the Billboard 200 for a 13th week, and the album now houses 14 Hot 100 top 10s — the most ever from a single album.
The Record Run It Ended
“Patient Zero” ends the reign of Ella Langley's “Choosin' Texas,” which spent 24 weeks at No. 1 — the longest run at the top in Hot 100 history, per Billboard. Notably, our September 28 prediction post had hedged at 23 weeks before the final tally came in at 24. Relive the milestone with Ella Langley's 24-week Hot 100 record with “Choosin' Texas”.
