Early Life

Rosalia Vila Tobella was born on September 25, 1992, in Sant Cugat del Vallès, near Barcelona, Spain. As a teenager, she fell in love with flamenco and the music of Camarón de la Isla, and began her formal training at the Taller de Músics before studying musicology and flamenco at the Catalonia College of Music (ESMUC), where she graduated with honors in 2017. While studying, she sang at weddings and bars to make ends meet.

Career

Her debut album, Los Ángeles (2017), made with Raül Refree, grew out of her ESMUC graduation project. The breakthrough came with El Mal Querer (2018), which won the Latin Grammy for Album of the Year and is listed on Rolling Stone's 500 Greatest Albums of All Time. The 2019 hit "Con Altura" with J Balvin made her a global name, followed by singles such as "Malamente," "Yo x Ti, Tú x Mí" with Ozuna, "Saoko," "Despechá," and "La Fama" with The Weeknd. Her 2022 album Motomami — an experimental mix of reggaeton and art pop — won Latin Grammy Album of the Year again, making her the first female artist to win it twice, and earned her the Grammy for Best Latin Rock or Alternative Album; it was also Metacritic's best-reviewed album of 2022. She returned in 2025 with Lux, an orchestral art-pop record sung in 13 languages that broke records for a Spanish-speaking female artist, and in 2026 she added a Brit Award for International Artist of the Year and Ivor Novello International Songwriter of the Year to her tally of two Grammy Awards, eleven Latin Grammy Awards, and multiple MTV Video Music Awards.
