Robbie Williams is an English pop superstar and former Take That member who became one of Britain's best-selling solo artists. With his signature ballad Angels and a record-breaking run of chart-toppers, he has headlined stadiums around the world for three decades.
Now in his BRITPOP era, Williams is back on the road on his 2025–2026 world tour, and his 13th studio album BRITPOP (released 2026) became his 16th UK Number 1 album — breaking the record for the most UK chart-toppers, previously held by The Beatles, according to reports.
Early Life
Robert Peter Williams was born on 13 February 1974 in Stoke-on-Trent, Staffordshire, England — age 52 as of October 2026. His parents are Janet (née Farrell) and Peter Williams (aka Pete Conway, a former comedian), and the family ran pubs — the Red Lion in Burslem and the Port Vale Social Club. He has one sibling, his sister Sally. Williams attended Mill Hill Primary and St Margaret Ward Catholic School in Tunstall, and left school without GCSEs.
Career
Williams joined Take That in 1990 as a teenager. He left the group in 1995 to launch a solo career in 1996, and later rejoined Take That, his former band, in 2010 for the Progress album and tour. The reunion also revived interest in his band catalogue — see Dreamers lyrics by Take That.
His solo debut album Life thru a Lens (1997) produced his breakthrough single "Angels" (December 1997) — his signature song, which peaked at UK No.4 with 12 consecutive weeks in the UK Top 10 and was voted the best song of the previous 25 years by public vote at the 2005 BRIT Awards. His major solo hits include Millennium, She's the One, Rock DJ, Feel, Eternity, Somethin' Stupid (with Nicole Kidman), Radio and Candy.
His 13th studio album BRITPOP (released 2026) became his 16th UK Number 1 album, breaking the record for the most UK chart-toppers, previously held by The Beatles — according to reports. Of the album, Williams said: "I set out to create the album that I wanted to write and release after I left Take That in 1995... There's some 'Brit' in there and there's certainly some 'pop' too — I'm immensely proud of this as a body of work." (via PA news agency)
On stage, his 2003 Knebworth concerts drew 375,000+ people over three nights (a UK attendance record at the time), and he entered the Guinness Book of World Records after 1.6 million tickets were sold in a single day for his 2006 world tour. His 2023 four-part Netflix documentary Robbie Williams reached No.1 in 22 countries, while his 2024 biopic Better Man (in which he is portrayed as a chimpanzee) won Best Film at the 2025 AACTA Awards. He is currently on the Britpop Tour — his 14th concert tour, running from 31 May 2025 to December 2026 with 75 shows across Europe, the Americas, Asia and Oceania, including an Australia/New Zealand leg in November 2026.
Achievements
Williams holds the record for 18 BRIT Awards — more than any other artist in history. He has reportedly sold over 80 million records worldwide (sources vary 77M–90M), and six of his albums appear among the Top 100 best-selling albums in UK chart history. His trophy cabinet puts him in the company of fellow British pop icon Elton John and British pop legend George Michael among the UK's most decorated hitmakers.
He was inducted into the UK Music Hall of Fame in 2004 (voted greatest artist of the 1990s), received the Outstanding Contribution to British Music award at the 2010 BRITs, and picked up the PRS for Music Icon Award at The Ivors in May 2025. He was also Robbie Williams named Album Icon for National Album Day 2026, a fitting honour for the BRITPOP era.
Personal Life
Williams married American actress Ayda Field in 2010. The couple have four children: Theodora, Charlton, Colette and Beau.
