Kiara Advani is one of the most recognisable young stars in Hindi cinema today. Born Alia Advani in Mumbai, she adopted the screen name 'Kiara' before her acting debut and rose to prominence with a string of successful films including Kabir Singh, Shershaah, Good Newwz and Satyaprem Ki Katha.
In 2026, Kiara Advani headlined Toxic: A Fairytale for Grown-Ups opposite Yash and announced that she is expecting her second child with husband Sidharth Malhotra, keeping her firmly in the headlines both on screen and off it.
Early Life
Born Alia Advani, Kiara grew up in Mumbai and adopted the screen name 'Kiara' shortly before her debut film Fugly (2014). The change was reportedly made at Salman Khan's suggestion, partly to avoid confusion with actor Alia Bhatt. The name itself was inspired by Priyanka Chopra's character 'Kiara' in Anjaana Anjaani (2010), as she revealed in a 2019 Filmfare interview.
Kiara was born on 31 July in Mumbai. Published sources differ on her birth year — some list 1991 while others cite 1992 — so the year remains unconfirmed in most biographies.
Her father, Jagdeep Advani, is a Sindhi businessman, and her mother, Genevieve Jaffrey, is a teacher. She has a younger brother, Mishaal, who is a musician. Through her maternal grandfather, Hamid Jaffrey, Kiara is linked to several film personalities: Hamid's brother Saeed Jaffrey was a celebrated actor, making him Kiara's great-uncle, while Hamid's second marriage to Bharti Ganguly — the daughter of Ashok Kumar — makes Kiara Ashok Kumar's step-great-granddaughter by marriage. Actor Javed Jaffrey, the son of Saeed Jaffrey, is her mother's cousin, according to reports.
She studied at the Cathedral and John Connon School in Mumbai and later earned a degree in Mass Communication from Jai Hind College.
Career
Kiara made her acting debut with Fugly (2014), for which she won the Screen Best Female Debut award. Her breakthrough came in 2016 with the sports biopic M.S. Dhoni: The Untold Story, in which she played Sakshi Dhoni. She then moved into Telugu cinema with Bharat Ane Nenu (2018) opposite Ram Charan and appeared in the Netflix anthology film Lust Stories (2018).
Her career-defining role arrived with Kabir Singh (2019), opposite Shahid Kapoor — whose own journey is covered in our Shahid Kapoor biography — which became one of the highest-grossing Hindi films of the year. The same year she appeared in Good Newwz, for which she won the IIFA Award for Best Supporting Actress in 2020. She followed it with Shershaah (2021), playing Dimple Cheema opposite Sidharth Malhotra, and later starred in Bhool Bhulaiyaa 2 (2022), Jugjugg Jeeyo (2022) and Satyaprem Ki Katha (2023).
Her performances brought her the Zee Cine Award for Performer of the Year Female (2023) and the Viewer's Choice Best Actress award for Satyaprem Ki Katha (2024), along with two Filmfare Best Actress nominations — for Shershaah (2022) and Satyaprem Ki Katha (2024).
