Early Life & Career Beginnings
Idrissa Akuna Elba grew up in Hackney, in London's East End. When HBO cast him as the Baltimore drug strategist Stringer Bell, that grounding showed: his calm, precise performance made him an overnight standout.

Stringer Bell in The Wire (2002–2004) introduced Elba to American audiences, but it was DCI John Luther in Luther (2010–2019) that made him a household name. The brooding detective won him the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Miniseries and brought him four Emmy nominations. In film he became Heimdall, the all-seeing gatekeeper of Asgard, across the Thor and Avengers films, and took on Nelson Mandela in Mandela: Long Walk to Freedom, which earned him a Golden Globe nomination in the drama category. His turn as the warlord Commandant in Beasts of No Nation won him the Screen Actors Guild Award for outstanding supporting actor.
Later screen work has kept him at the top of the call sheet: Bloodsport in The Suicide Squad, the outlaw Rufus Buck in The Harder They Fall, and the voice of Knuckles in the Sonic films. He made his feature directorial debut with Yardie in 2018. Off screen he DJs as Big Driis, was named one of Time's 100 most influential people in 2016, was crowned People's Sexiest Man Alive in 2018, and is a co-owner of the Formula E team Kiro Race Co.
