Early Life
Jaylah Ji'mya Hickmon was born on August 14, 1998, in Tampa, Florida. She took the stage name Doechii and embraced the nickname "Swamp Princess" as a proud nod to her Florida roots.
Career
Doechii first went viral on TikTok in 2021 with her self-released track "Yucky Blucky Fruitcake." The buzz led to a record deal in 2022 with Top Dawg Entertainment and Capitol Records — making her the first female rapper signed to TDE, the label behind Kendrick Lamar (read our Kendrick Lamar biography).
In 2023, "What It Is (Block Boy)" featuring Kodak Black became her first entry on the Billboard Hot 100 and was certified platinum. Her 2024 mixtape "Alligator Bites Never Heal" debuted in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, while her single "Anxiety" became her first top-10 hit on the Billboard Hot 100. Like Doja Cat (see our Doja Cat biography), Doechii moves easily between rap and melody — a versatility also heard in the R&B-leaning style of artists such as Tinashe (read our Tinashe biography).
Awards
At the 67th Annual Grammy Awards, "Alligator Bites Never Heal" won Best Rap Album, making Doechii only the third woman to win the category. She later added a second Grammy when the "Anxiety" music video won Best Music Video. In total she holds two Grammy Awards, two MTV Video Music Awards, and a BET Award. Billboard named her Woman of the Year at the 2025 Women in Music event, after honoring her as a Rising Star in 2023.
Recent Work
Doechii has become one of rap's most in-demand collaborators. She appeared on Tyler, the Creator's "Balloon" (2024), joined the Weeknd and Playboi Carti on the "Timeless" remix (2025), and featured on Lady Gaga's "Runway" (2026) — read our Lady Gaga biography for more on Gaga. A new album has been widely discussed by fans, but no official title or release date has been confirmed — according to reports, any rumored details should be treated as unconfirmed.
