Formation & Members

BLACKPINK (stylized BLΛƆKPIИK) is a South Korean girl group formed by YG Entertainment, with Interscope handling their international releases. Their sound blends K-pop, EDM, hip-hop and trap, and they are based in Seoul. After years of training and a lineup finalized in mid-2016, the group name was revealed on June 29, 2016. They made their debut on August 8, 2016 with the single album Square One.

The group name carries a deliberate message: "beauty is not everything." The quartet consists of:

  • Jisoo — Kim Ji-soo, born January 3, 1995 (31), lead vocalist, South Korea
  • Jennie — Kim Jennie, born January 16, 1996 (30), main rapper, South Korea
  • Rosé — Roseanne Park, born February 11, 1997 (29), main vocalist, born in Auckland, New Zealand
  • Lisa — Lalisa Manoban, born March 27, 1997 (29), main dancer and rapper, born in Bangkok, Thailand

Career

BLACKPINK arrived as instant chart-toppers. Their debut single album Square One featured "Whistle," which hit No. 1 on the Korea Circle Digital Chart, and "Boombayah," which topped Billboard's World Digital Songs chart. Their 2018 single "Ddu-Du Ddu-Du" became the first song by a Korean female group to enter the UK Singles Chart and earn an RIAA certification, while its video became the first by a Korean group to pass 2 billion YouTube views.

The milestones kept coming. "How You Like That" (2020) set multiple Guinness World Records for its 24-hour views, and "Ice Cream," their collaboration with Selena Gomez, peaked at No. 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 — the highest-charting hit by a female Korean act. Studio albums The Album (2020) and Born Pink (2022) cemented their status, with Born Pink topping both the Billboard 200 and the UK Official Albums Chart. The accompanying Born Pink World Tour became the highest-grossing tour by a female group in history, earning $78.5 million from 26 shows.

In April 2023, they became the first K-pop act to headline Coachella, delivering the most-streamed set of the festival. They are the first music artist's YouTube channel to pass 100 million subscribers, and their story reached screens with the Netflix documentary BLACKPINK: Light Up the Sky (October 14, 2020). Their fandom is known as BLINK.
