ARMAAN MALIK BIOGRAPHY - AGE, CAREER, SONGS & FACTS

Armaan Malik was born on 22 July 1995 in Mumbai, Maharashtra, and is one of India’s most successful playback singers of his generation. He shot to Bollywood fame with the title track of Hero (2015), became a household name with the non-film single “Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon”, conquered South Indian cinema with the Telugu chartbuster “Butta Bomma”, and later crossed over to international pop with his English debut “Control”.

Early Life

Armaan was born into a family of musicians. His father Daboo (Dabboo) Malik is a music director, his mother is Jyoti Malik, and his elder brother Amaal Mallik is a composer and singer. His uncle Anu Malik is one of Bollywood’s best-known composers, and his grandfather Sardar Malik was a veteran music director. At ten, Armaan finished eighth on Sa Re Ga Ma Pa L’il Champs in 2006, and made his debut as a child singer with “Bum Bum Bole” in Taare Zameen Par (2007), composed by Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy.

Career

Armaan’s adult playback debut came with “Tumko Toh Aana Hi Tha” in Jai Ho (2014). His Bollywood breakthrough arrived in 2015 with “Main Hoon Hero Tera”, the title track of Hero composed by his brother Amaal Mallik — the same year his non-film single “Main Rahoon Ya Na Rahoon” made him a household name. He rose alongside a generation of young playback stars — read Atif Aslam’s biography for another defining voice of the era — and has often credited the legends before him, including the late singer celebrated in KK’s biography.

Notable Bollywood songs: “Naina” (Khoobsurat, 2014), “Auliya” (Ungli, 2014), “Khwaishein” (Calendar Girls, 2015), “Tumhe Apna Banane Ka” and “Wajah Tum Ho” (Hate Story 3, 2015), “Bol Do Na Zara” (Azhar, 2016), “Buddhu Sa Mann” (Kapoor & Sons, 2016), “Sab Tera” (Baaghi, 2016), and “Jab Tak” and “Besabriyaan” (M.S. Dhoni, 2016). Like many of his peers, Armaan has been part of an industry built on memorable partnerships — from celebrated duets to comebacks such as Shreya Ghoshal’s reunion with Sonu Nigam.

His South Indian breakthrough came with “Butta Bomma” from the Telugu blockbuster Ala Vaikunthapurramuloo. The lyrical version released on 23 December 2019, followed by the full video on 21 February 2020, composed by S. Thaman and released on Aditya Music. Picturised on Allu Arjun — read Allu Arjun’s biography — the song became a nationwide sensation and won Armaan the SIIMA Award for Best Playback Singer at the September 2021 ceremony.

Recent Work

In 2020, Armaan launched his international career with his debut English single “Control” (Arista/Sony). He became the first Indian singer-songwriter to feature on the Spotify Times Square billboard, and the track won him the MTV Europe Music Award for Best India Act in 2020. His follow-up English single “You” (2022) earned another MTV EMA Best India Act nomination, while “Next 2 Me” and “How Many” both topped the Billboard Top Triller Global chart. He also teamed up with Eric Nam and KSHMR for “Echo”, a K-pop crossover.
