Early Life

Angèle Joséphine Aimée Van Laeken was born in December 1995 in Uccle, Brussels, Belgium, and grew up in a family steeped in the arts. Her father is the singer Marka and her mother is actress and comedian Laurence Bibot, while her older brother is the rapper Roméo Elvis. Raised around music and theatre, she learned the piano as a child — an instrument that still anchors much of her songwriting today.

Career

Angèle first caught the public’s attention in 2017 with “La Loi de Murphy”, a witty, piano-driven single that went viral across the French-speaking world. Her debut album Brol, released on October 5, 2018, confirmed her as a major new talent, selling more than a million copies in France and earning a 2× Diamond certification from the SNEP.

In 2019 she released “Balance ton quoi”, a sharp satirical track that became the defining song of France’s BalanceTonPorc movement, the French equivalent of #MeToo. The song cemented her reputation as an artist unafraid to tackle social issues with humour and bite.

Her second album Nonante-Cinq arrived on December 3, 2021, the same year Netflix released the documentary “Angèle”, which followed her rise and life on the road. In 2022 she opened for Dua Lipa on the Future Nostalgia Tour, bringing her music to arenas across Europe. Two years later she performed Kavinsky’s “Nightcall” alongside Phoenix at the closing ceremony of the Paris 2024 Olympic Games.
